Once upon a time there were editors that freed that thin book, but now
the publishers appear to think that they can make more money without
editors, even if they have to waste a forest or two.

Essentially you are saying that a fat book like the scripture contains
many thin independent story books.
So, how can it be a coherent tale? They all have independent authors
and time lines which could not have been of value as a single source.
